Parents need to know that Love at First Sight is a sweet, if predictable, romcom, with all the usual cliches found in the genre but no content that's especially mature. Hadley (Haley Lu Richardson) and Oliver (Ben Hardy) fall for each other after meeting at an airport and ending up on the same flight, only to become separated, with no easy way of finding each other again. Expect occasional strong language, including "s--t," "pissed," and one use of "f--k," along with some drinking -- though not to excess. One of the central characters is dealing with their divorced father's remarriage, the other, their mother's lung cancer. There's flirting, innuendo, and a few kisses on the lips. Characters learn the importance of honesty and communication and show courage and empathy in working through their difficulties. Based on 7 parent reviews. A brilliant film! Wow! A new favorite movie! Writing excellent. Acting excellent. Directing excellent. Not your typical meet, get separated, spend the whole movie looking for each other, find each other in the last scene movie! Much deeper themes at play. And the use of color, the family relationships, and the way the narrator is woven through the many scenes- all refreshing! No idea why CSM has it at 2 stars. 5 stars from our family of adults and teens! If John Bunyan had written a romcom -- it's all about walking the straight and narrow path. Commonsense Media's rating should be higher. This movie is completely family, commitment and marriage affirming, with marriage presented throughout as an aspirational ideal. It is charming, quirky, romantic and cute, but it is NOT a generic romcom, it is something else disguised as a romcom, as the narrator tells us at the beginning. A romcom? In 2023 -- with NO sexual baggage to unpack, no toxic or messy exes, no love triangles, no young people with broken hearts desperate for love, no battle of the sexes, no girlboss characters out to put men in their place? A modern romcom in which everyone is straight . the sexes are complimentary, not competitive . the men and women without exception like each other and want to help each other . and in which every character honors family and marriage? Nope. Not a conventional 21st century romcom in the age of woke. The two young leads make a cute couple and you will be rooting for them from the start, but they are not romance rockets, they are dealing with other issues and find each other along the way. We glimpse four marriages. The first is ending in divorce, which comes as a complete surprise to Hadley, an older teenage girl. Her father is clearly the hero figure in her life, and she is ebullient at the news that he has been offered a visiting professorship at Oxford ("actually teaching poetry in the country Shakespeare is from. "). She is bursting with pride in her dad . and oh, by the way, she is also excited because she had always wanted to study abroad. The parents exchange an anxious look, and mom lets slip an ominous hint: mother and daughter are staying behind. The backstory isn't given, but the impression is of mutual exhaustion and a couple ready to admit defeat and move on. Divorce is presented as a failure and a betrayal of code, but there is no hint of infidelity, substance abuse, or any of the other great demons. The parents seem to have kept up appearances, probably to protect their daughter, but she is now old enough to cope and the job offer seems a reasonable place to make a break. Fast forward a year or more. Hadley is too well behaved to act out, but she is Not A Happy Camper when she is asked serve as a bridesmaid in her father's second marriage. This is the occasion for her flight to the UK. She will have a meet cute with a nice British guy at the airport.
